Today, our devotion continues the thought on Balance in the Christian life with a devotion entitled, “A Balanced Christian Life Will Involve Working.” My text is II Corinthians 5:8-10, where we see “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” (KJV) Let me say that absolutely no one is saved by works, but once a person is saved, then the believer has some work to do. Please notice from our text that our work or our labor is to be accepted of Him, not us, and that will be accounted for at the Judgment Seat of Christ.
Our work or labor involves many different areas in our Christian life and to be balanced as a Christian we need to understand this. We could see our Lord at any moment and give an account for our labor. It takes labor to maintain a pure heart and mind, which is accomplished through saturating ourselves with God’s Word. It takes labor to manifest an outward life of purity, holiness, and modesty, which is accomplished through diligent study of and submission to the Word of God. Our works do matter to our Savior and one day, we will either receive a reward or we will suffer loss of reward. The believer who is not balanced, whether preacher or church member, portrays holiness on Sunday, but can look and act like this ungodly world on Monday. The Judgment Seat will tell the story, but we can determine now to effect that time by studying and submitting to God’s Word as we seek a balanced Christian life.
