Today’s devotion is “Call His Name Jesus” and my text is Luke 1:31. “And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.” (KJV) Here, the angel instructs Mary as to the name of the Son of God that she would bring forth into this world. Jesus means “Jehovah is Savior” and is the equivalent to the Old Testament name “Joshua.”
In Matthew 1:21, in obedience to the angel as he dreamed, Joseph gave Him the name “Jesus.” “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (KJV) As God the Father measured the depth of the depravity of mankind, lost without God, He could only fulfill that need by the gift of His own precious Son.
This sweet song comes to my heart as I think about Mary and Joseph calling His name Jesus! “Jesus, Oh how sweet the Name! Jesus, every day the same! Jesus, let all saints proclaim, its worthy praise forever!” During this upcoming Christmas season, take the time to think about the wonder of God the Father sending His only begotten Son to this sin-cursed world just so that you and I could be saved by God’s amazing grace!
