The thought for our devotion today is, “The Importance of Studying God’s Word.” My text is Psalm 119:97, where we see, “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.” (KJV) Here in our text, the Psalmist refers to the Word of God as “thy law.” The importance of God’s Word, the Bible, cannot be overemphasized. It is through the Written Word that we come to know the Living Word, our Savior Jesus Christ.
How do we know that Jesus Christ is the Savior of whosoever will? The Word of God tells us so! How do we know that our eternal salvation depends completely upon the finished work of Christ on the cross of Calvary rather than on our own works to keep us saved? The Bible tells us so! How do we know how to please God and live our life accomplishing His perfect will? The Word of God tells us how this is accomplished! How do we know that our Lord hears our prayers and answers our prayers as we abide in Him and do those things that are pleasing in His sight? The Bible declares this to our heart!
The Word of God is our spiritual food (water, milk, bread, and meat). It is our joy, our light, and the roadmap through which we can avoid the pitfalls and snares that Satan will lay in our pathway. Studying the scriptures and meditating upon them will result in obedience to the Word of God and that is so important to the happiness and fruitfulness of the child of God. Only those who magnify the Word of God to the place of primary importance in their lives can expect happiness, peace, joy and clear direction for every day.
