Our devotion today is entitled “The Key to Happiness” and my scripture text is Proverbs 16:19-20, where we see, “Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.” (KJV) Here in this passage, the Holy Spirit moves the hand of Solomon to pen some important keys to being happy in this life. Let’s take a brief look at these.
First, the wise man places great importance on humility being an important part of a person’s character in order to be happy. It is true that someone who is proud is “disappointment” looking for a place to happen. Such a person lives in a “me world” and no one has everything to go their way all the time, so there will be the continual disappointment in not being pleased with those who don’t measure up. Next, Solomon emphasizes dependence upon the wisdom of God in handling the difficult matters of life. If we don’t live our life under the control of God’s wisdom, we won’t be happy because we will be trying to recover from one mistake after another.
Finally, the point of massive importance in being happy is to continually have our trust in our Lord for every aspect of our life. If our trust is not in our Lord, we will not be happy because we will be trusting in our own ability that will let us down time and time again, and also others will see our ineptness in growing spiritually. The key to happiness is less of “self” and more of our “Savior.” It really is that simple.
