Our devotion today will continue the Lord’s message to the church in Pergamos, and my text is Revelation 2:12. “And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;” (KJV) The Lord Jesus is addressing the “pastor” or the “angel…messenger” of the Pergamos church and the Lord reveals an important characteristic about Himself that every man of God and church family should always keep in mind. Please notice these words “These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges.” This is the standard by which everything concerning the ministry of the local church is measured.
Now, what does this statement represent? I believe this reveals the power and authority of the precious Word of God. In Hebrews 4:12, we see, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (KJV) The Word of God is quick, or living. The Word of God is powerful, or effective. The Word of God is sharper, or in plainer words, it can cut with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel. The Word of God pierces the heart to reveal its condition and discerns the position that is being chosen in life and also the path that is being taken, either to God or away from God. The Word of God is the standard, established by the darling Son of God, by which every church is accountable. God help me as a pastor and help our church family to esteem God’s precious Word like we will wish we had, when we see the living Word face to face one day!
