In today’s devotion, I want to consider this thought “The Removal of Landmarks in Pergamos” with my text being Revelation 2:14-15. “But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.” (KJV) First, I want us to notice in these verses the word “them.” This word implies that not everyone was getting cozy with the ungodly world in that day. There was a remnant of believers in the church in Pergamos that were refusing to allow the worldliness of their day to invade their lives. In our day, many children of God are yielding to the pressures from family, friends and even from efforts made in many churches to “move the ministry forward” to drop standards, remove doctrinal landmarks and get cozy with this world. Such actions are viewed as an illegal marriage in the sight of God!
Please notice with me what the Lord discovers in the church in Pergamos. He sees those who “hold the doctrine of Balaam” which “corrupts” the church ministry with lustful desires brought about by immodest, provocative dress and also having activities that open the door for immorality. The basis of this doctrine is found in Numbers 24 & 25 and gives us an accurate picture of the direction for the modern-day Contemporary Movement. The Lord also sees those who hold to the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which is the heretical teaching of the Catholic Church starting to flourish as it begins to spread its roots in this Pergamos church. As of today, the Vatican is seemingly “friendly” and “servant oriented” but the day is coming in which the Harlot Church of Revelation 17 will live up to the meaning of its name here, “Nico” (to conquer) “laity” (the people).
