Our devotion centers on the Thanksgiving Season and is entitled “The Result of Counting Blessings.” My text is I Thessalonians 5:18, where we read, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (KJV) We sing the song at our church throughout the year and not just at Thanksgiving, “Count Your Blessings” because it’s important to give thanks every day.
Perhaps you have heard of the man who wanted to sell his house, so he went to a friend who was a real estate agent, and describing his house and grounds to him, he asked him to advertise it to sell it. His friend did as was requested and then read the advertisement to the homeowner. “Read that again!” said the man who wanted to sell his house. He did and was astonished when the homeowner said, “The house is not for sale! All my life I’ve wanted a place just like the one you’ve described, but I never knew I had it until I heard what you’ve written about it!”
So often we are guilty of passing over the gracious blessings of God that are faithful, constant and already enjoyed every day. We grow dissatisfied and a sure evidence of dissatisfaction is living life without that “smile” that comes from knowing how truly blessed we are. “When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost! Count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done!” Amen and Amen!
