Today, I want to continue with the second church John the apostle wrote to and that would be the church in Smyrna. My text today is Revelation 2:8 where we see, “And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;” (KJV) From this verse, I want to point out that we have a “Sovereign in our Suffering.” Notice that the Lord reminded the church family in Smyrna that He is “the first and the last” which has everything to do with our Lord’s authority and control over the circumstances in His church. He is in charge of our Intercessory suffering, because He knows the end from the beginning and who we will be able to help later on. He is in charge of our Educative suffering, because He knows what circumstances will best teach us the important lessons we need to learn as a Christian.
Notice from our text verse that He also reminds the church of an important fact that they needed to have fresh on their heart. He told them that He “was dead, and is alive.” The Smyrna church family was hurting and suffering persecution on a grand scale, but He also knew what it was to be persecuted. He also knew what it meant to suffer in every way imaginable. He has already been where they were at in suffering, and child of God, He has already been where you’re at. He knows what you are going through and He has all of the grace that you need for every trial and heart-ache and pain that will course through your heart and mind and body! In fact, we will never face anything in our Christian life that He has not already passed that way before us. God help us to just keep on eyes on our Sovereign Lord and let His sweet presence bless and comfort our heart in our suffering.
