Today’s devotion is “The Importance of Being an Effective Christian” and my text is found in Ephesians 5:6-8, where we see, “Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:” (KJV) Here, the Holy Spirit warns us and also instructs us concerning our effectiveness as Christians. There are people, whether preachers or church members, who will say, “It doesn’t matter how you live, just so long as you’re sincere in your belief system and you love Jesus!” But that is contrary to scripture, and those truly saved who buy into such garbage is deceived.
Notice what Paul says here. “Ye were sometimes darkness,…” or in other words, before you were saved, you lived like a person who didn’t know Christ, who had never had the miraculous change that the New Birth makes in a person’s heart and life. There is nothing alarming about an unsaved person living the life of an unsaved person. It is extremely alarming and disturbing when a person who is saved doesn’t live their life for the One who saved them! It brings a reproach upon Christ! It eliminates their effectiveness for Christ and the Gospel and actually helps lost sinners maintain their path to Hell and an eternal Lake of Fire! So, the importance of being an effective Christian, or “walking as children of light,” is a matter of LIFE and DEATH!
