Our devotion today finishes the message given to the church in Ephesus. In Revelation 2:7 we read “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” (KJV) I want to bring to your heart how the Lord closes this letter to the church family in Ephesus. He closes it with this command, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith…” which is so important. It is necessary that we as pastors and preachers give people what the Holy Spirit directs us to give and not what another person we admire thinks, or what we prefer. It is of the utmost importance that the messenger be empty of himself in every possible way and be filled with the Holy Ghost of God.
Remember that these in this church are saved people who have left their first love, so they were in a backslidden condition even though they were busy doing stuff and standing right. Many times, a backslider won’t hear because they are satisfied in their spiritually cold condition. But it is so wonderful when a believer gets tired of the spiritual freezer and gets serious with God about their love for Him and His work. The final command is given to the overcomer in the church. Those in the church who overcome the temptation to backslide on God and instead, love Him with all their heart and life will get to “eat of the Tree of Life,” while those who are characterized by loving this world, their flesh and Satan’s lies will not get to enjoy this reward. Please understand, our Savior saves everyone the exact same way, by grace through faith, but He will not reward everyone the same. Rewards will depend upon how our Savior will determine the worthiness of reward, not according to the way we see things. So, let’s stay in the “Book” and let’s stay close to our “first love!”
