Our devotion today is, “The Price John Paid for his Lord” and my text is Revelation 1:9. “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.” (KJV) Here, John is on the Isle of Patmos and he gets personal and tender as he addresses his brothers and sisters in Christ. There is no doubt that the apostle John was God’s Man and that he knew the price that is paid many times for serving God. Here in this verse, John shows us the price that is paid for faithfulness to the Lord.
First, we see, “I John…” or if I may say this, John was taking ownership of who he was in Christ. John is not poor-mouthing for being saved and experiencing trouble for it. John is taking ownership as a faithful under-shepherd and setting the right example for his flock. He is steadying their hearts as to how to face difficult times with God’s strength. Next, John saw the price of companionship as well. He said, “I am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ,” He was letting them know that they were all in this thing together! Finally, John saw the price of a Godly Testimony. He said, “I’m on the isle of Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.” This is where John was banished to because he preached the right message, honored his Savior and would not bow to Rome! Even though not everyone will appreciate our Godly stand, let’s learn from John’s example and pay the price!
