Today’s devotion today is, “What Does it Mean to Wrest the Scriptures?” My text is II Peter 3:15-16, where we see, “And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.” (KJV) When people take the words we say and twist them into something we didn’t say, we don’t like it. God has given us warning in His Word that there would be those, especially in these last days, who would “wrest” or “twist” the Word of God to make it say what God has not said.
The word “wrest” means “to wrench” and is a word that describes an instrument of torture, specifically, the torture rack. So from this thought comes the meaning to “twist out of shape, to pervert, to distort, to make crooked” as the victims of the torture rack would suffer from its effects. Please notice that whoever twists or wrests God’s Word is declared to be unlearned, or ignorant and unstable, or unsettled as having no moral absolutes. What is the consequence for those who “wrest” the precious Word of God? The answer is that they heap “destruction” upon themselves, or in plainer words, they personally become a spiritual ruin and wasteland and suffer great spiritual loss. Whoever tries to destroy the Word of God in the hearts and minds of those who need a Savior will suffer eternal destruction as Revelation 22:18-19 states, “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” (KJV)
